I'm not really clear on how we customize the code. Could you please break it down for us, and tell us which portion of code should be take from where, etc?

The "trends" widget shows a product from each brand/category that is recently popular on ShopStyle. We don't have many options to customize this widget as yet, but from the above page you can quickly access the library of widgets, and feel free to suggest new ones.
